Carlos E. Sanchez-Pimienta (he/him) is a Vanier Scholar 2022, Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholar 2023, and PhD Candidate. He studies in the Social and Behavioural Health Sciences program of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto. Carlos is interested in how the colonial story of Euro-Western modernity constrains our understanding of the relationships between ecosystems and health. Through his doctoral research, Carlos explores how Indigenous communities systematically separated from their knowledge systems in Canada and Mexico are working toward cultural and ecological resurgence despite the dominance of modernity’s story. Additionally, Carlos is an RA in the CIHR-funded research project “Curricular Reform for Public Health in the Anthropocene,” in which he is collaborating with other faculty members, professionals and students to re-imagine what public health education should be like in a time of ecological crises through collaborative autoethnography. Service-wise, Carlos is part of the International Union for Health Promotion and Education Waiora Planetary Health Global Working Group. In his free time, Carlos enjoys hiking, hanging out with friends, and dancing.
